Kettle River Mountain Bikers’ Association
Last week we had a bike club director’s meeting at the shop to discuss and decide on a number of issues important to mountain biking in Grand Forks and Boundary Country.
The AGM/club ride has been set for May 7th at 11am. We will meet at the parking lot where the TCT meets Santa Rosa Rd. Bring your bike, your gear and your best attitude for a short meeting and a ride down Dewdney trail. Some will want to ride the climb. Others can use the shuttle that will be available. See you there !!
Trail building will proceed at Marshall Pond and Bonanza. Maintenance is needed on Bundschuh and Needle. If anyone out there wants to pitch in with a strong back please leave a contact here or at the shop.
We are now listed on trailforks which is an interactive website designed to assist in reporting the condition of a trail and then any remedial action needed by the local trail association. It also allows for donations to be made to trail associations via a trailforks phone app.
Signage was discussed with a view to improving our trail system so that riders can find a trail and not get lost. More signage is being planned for various trailheads as well as trail markers for the trails themselves.
Bundschuh is always the first trail open here, so go ride it and let us know how it went.
Happy trails, bf

Some incredible backcountry ski conditions [-8c with blowing snow and sun] at the Paulson Summit yesterday with Wayne and Larry….here Larry is showing off his amazing teli turns through the trees.
Last fall our family took a trip to the Spanish Mediterranean island of Mallorca to visit our son who lives and works there. This, for a bike guy, was probably the best vacation we could have undertaken. It’s a small island but fairly densely populated and it has a very long and varied history [Rome built the first town here in 123BCE]. The main city, Palma has half a million inhabitants and many bike shops servicing a variety of cycling needs. There are smaller towns scattered all over the island each with its own bike shop.
This island has become a cycling mecca for all types of cyclists; road, mountain and urban. We were there at the perfect time of year. The crowds were smaller, the weather was warm but not overbearingly hot and prices were reasonable. The markets in each town were going full vigor. The pro cycling teams from northern Europe who use this island as an early season training ground were gone but there were nonetheless hoards of recreational roads cyclists everywhere we looked.
The small town of Alaró which became our home base is located at the foot of the main mountain range, Tramuntana. We did a number of rides into the mountain. This may be a small island but it proudly sports big road climbs on narrow pavement. Although Alaró is a town of
only 2000 residents it still has a great little bike shop, Cycling Planet run by a former national cyclocross champion of Spain. Bike rental rates here are very reasonable for either road or mountain.
One climb on Mallorca which i would highly recommend is not long
but can be combined with longer routes…sa Calobra !! It’s only a 10 km climb from the beach to the tunnel but the grade is super challenging and the vistas epic.
If you do decide to go you will not be disappointed. Talk to me before you go. Oh, and did i mention the price of beer?
Hasta la vista !!
Speaking of Spain, we were able to acquire the BUFF line of headwear recently. This very versatile product can be used in any number of ways; headband, neck warmer, bandana, balaclava, helmet liner, beanie and wristband. Fabric options include either a breathable microfibre or a merino wool. Smaller headband options are also available. Best of all, this product is made in Barcelona !! Stop by the shop today and check our selection.
We offer our deepest sympathies to the members of the Castlegar Cross Country Ski Society on the sudden loss of your trail groomer who was servicing trails on February 10th. We also extent our condolences to the family who lost a member who will be sorely missed.
